Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms and Flash Flood Risk: PMD Issues Weather Alert Until September 6
Bahria Town Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a severe weather advisory, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, urban flooding and flash floods across upper parts of the country through September 6.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre, moist monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating the upper regions, while a westerly wave continues to influence northern parts of the country. The interaction of these weather systems is expected to intensify rainfall and thunderstorm activity over several areas.
Regional Weather Forecast
Islamabad and Upper Punjab — September 3 to 5
Intermittent rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and isolated heavy falls is expected across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala and adjoining areas.
Residents, particularly those living in low-lying and vulnerable locations, have been advised to remain vigilant during periods of intense rainfall.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — September 3 to 5
Several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds.
Peshawar, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Mardan and Kohat are among the areas expected to experience significant weather activity. Heavy downpours could also increase the risk of sudden flooding in local nullahs and streams.
Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan — September 3 to 6
Frequent rain and thunderstorms are forecast across Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Gilgit, Skardu and Hunza.
Isolated intense rainfall may trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous and vulnerable areas, potentially affecting transportation and road connectivity.
Sindh and Balochistan
Most parts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to remain hot and humid. However, localized dust-thunderstorms may develop in areas including Zhob, Barkhan and parts of the coastal belt.
Urban Flooding and Flash Flood Risks
Authorities have highlighted several potential hazards associated with the forecast weather system:
Urban Flooding: Heavy downpours, particularly on September 4 and 5, could result in urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Lahore.
Flash Floods: Intense rainfall may cause sudden rises in water levels in local nullahs, streams and waterways across Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Landslides: Continued rainfall in mountainous regions could trigger landslides and disrupt road networks, particularly along vulnerable routes in northern Pakistan.
Travel Advisory: Tourists and travelers have been urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable northern areas during periods of severe weather.
Agricultural Precautions: Farmers have been advised to monitor updated weather forecasts and adjust irrigation and crop-management activities accordingly.
